He was a teen ther during the race riots in the ’40s delivering papers on his bike. He told me he talked to people in the streets about their issues, talked them out of kicking the shit out of him, and I believe the experience was formative in his life. He had a spark and a humanness that came from his experiences there.
He moved to California to get away from the cold and for job opportunities. Near the end of his life he wasn’t always lucid, but he always talked about “going home.” I guess he meant Detroit. Thank you for sharing this Jess. xo!
