ODDlight Teacher Feature: Megan Walsh

Jun 6th, 2024 oddfam #ODDlight

Like Ina Garten, Megan Walsh is the queen of getting "back to basics." Her classes are like a perfect roasted chicken: organized and precise with just the right amount of heart and feeling. With extensive training in YIN, RESTORATIVE, and KIDS YOGA, as well as Anusara and Anatomy, Megan seeks to bring her thorough knowledge of the practice to others primarily for healing purposes and to help others overcome obstacles.

If you're looking to enhance your asana with meditation and pranayama or get accessible instruction into and fun transitions between complicated yoga poses, then Megan's FLOW or SLOW FLOW classes are where you need to roll out your mat to discover where your practice is headed and how it can bring you a fresh perspective. Check out the Q&A below to get to know ODD's own "Ina Garten of yoga."

What are your "Big 3?"

Taurus sun ♉  Aquarius moon ♒  Cancer rising ♋

Five words to describe yourself?

Loving, Funny, Deep, Nurturing, Feisty

What's an ODD fact about you?

I spent two years working at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York. I was exposed to many incredible spiritual teachers and it was life changing for me!

One thing you're working on in your personal practice right now?

Meditation, pranayama, and returning to the basics!

Where are you when you're not on the mat?

Mom, wife, daughter, friend, student, and movement enthusiast!

Favorite food or restaurant?

My husband and my Mother-in-law's cooking. They make the most incredible home-cooked Indian food with a large dose of love.

Something that inspires you?

Overcoming obstacles & my family and friends

What initially inspired you to become a yoga instructor?

I didn't realize it at the time, but I came to yoga to manage symptoms of what I now know was PTSD. I was pretty fearful and sad at the time, and yoga allowed me a healing space to feel safe and calm. I also learned to be less reactive and more tolerant of my own emotions. I wanted to provide space for others to experience that as well, and completed my teacher training back in 2006 in NYC. Prior to yoga, I studied dance and many other healing modalities, all of which inform my yoga classes.

Where are you inviting play into your practice/day to day?

Through fun yoga transitions, music, and exploring more complicated postures in an approachable way.

If your students take home ONE lesson from your class, what do you hope it is?

That there is no perfect yoga practice and breathing and feeling good in your body is the only goal!

What song/album/playlist do you have on repeat right now?

Right now it's this one!

One affirmation you always come back to?

I wish I could show you, when you are lonely or in darkness, the astonishing light of your own being.-Hafiz

How are you feeling good these days?

Sleep, Yoga, good food, family and friends!
