Lani Engstrom Los Angeles Yoga Teacher at One Down Dog

ODDlight Teacher Feature: Lani Engstrom

Sep 16th, 2024 oddfam #ODDlight

Not only is Lani a boisterous presence at the head of class, but she's also lead teacher Cindy Godell's right hand, helping out with things like scheduling those monthly workshops you all know and love. As a self-proclaimed "balls to the wall person," Lani keeps it surprisingly simple and accessible in class – a reminder to herself and her students to ease off and slow down. With simplicity comes room to play! In any Lani class, you can expect: good tunes, a laugh, messing up left and right, and of course, a twerk sesh. If you're trying to take things less seriously, learn more about Lani's fear of cats below and join her on the mat in FLOW, SLOW FLOW, or SWEAT.

What are your "Big 3?"

Scorpio sun ♏ Gemini moon♊  Aquarius rising ♒

Five words to describe yourself?

sunshine-y, empathetic, hilarious, trusting and bootylicious

What's an ODD fact about you?

I'm deeeeeply afraid of all cats

One thing you're working on in your practice right now?

Easing off! I'm such a balls to the walls person, I have to remind myself to slow down and keep it simple.

Where are you when you're not on the mat?

The beach, Dodger stadium, my patio, a concert, and on my couch watching Survivor!

What's your fave food or restaurant?

Sushi, cereal and chocolate chip cookies

Something or someone that inspires you?

Right now, my little sister. She's a new mom and she's kicking ass at it!

What initially inspired you to become a yoga instructor?

I'm going to have to go ahead and say COURTNEY SAULS on this one. And of course my deep love for the practice and wanting to spread the goodness to the people!

Where are you inviting play into your practice/day to day?

Reminding myself this is my special time to connect with ME, fill up my cup, and let go of the shit that just doesn't matter!

If a student takes home ONE lesson from your class, what do you hope it is?

It ain't that serious!

What song/album/playlist do you have on repeat right now?

Brat (duh), Remi Wolf, Joey Valence & Brae, and Sierra Ferrell!

One affirmation you always come back to?

I AM ENOUGH.

How are you feeling good these days?

Remembering how far I've come! Fresh to LA Lani would have never dreamed of working for the best yoga studio in town and building a following of the best students there are!

How do you incorporate fiery fitness or more intense movement into your practice, if at all?

It's so hard for me to be still! You knowwww I'm adding a twerk sesh into any pose I possibly can!
