Day 30 – Lessons Learned

I have been alive for 30 years.

30 years of memories, 30 years of lessons learned, 30 years of ups and downs, 30 years of growing up.

When I started this blog I had this idea of how it would go – that it would be easy to write and tons of fun.  In the end it was hard work – I had to really look at my shit and confront the things that were no longer serving me.  It has been a tremendous growth process – one I am grateful to have been able to share.

Yesterday was an awesome day.  I turned 30 with some of the most important people in my life (the rest of you were missed!!) and I got to think about all that I have learned in this process.

So here it is:
30 things I have learned in my 30 years on this earth…

  1. Everything is a choice – happiness or suffering, we get to choose.  Figure out what makes you happy, then do more of it. Day 25 – happy
  2. There are only 2 guarantees in life: change and death.  Change takes time and death comes quicker than you think. Get busy living your life, don’t wait for someone else to live it for you, for the right time, the right place etc.  The only right, is right now. Go for it! Start now, do it NOW.  Day 1 – the beginning
  3. At the end of the day I regret the things I did not do, more than the things I did poorly.
  4. Anything worth having requires effort.  Day 14 – the start
  5. Life is 10% what happens, 90% what you make of it… if something is making you miserable, stop doing it.  If you can’t, change your attitude.
  6. All people are assholes. All people are inherently good.  Life is paradox.
  7. There are 3 sides to every story – yours, the other persons and the truth.  When you point your finger out into the world, there are 3 fingers pointing back at you – look within.
  8. Dogs can teach us everything we need to know: stop and smell the roses, be kind, cuddle, when your happy shake your entire body to let others know… it will make them smile, don’t take anything for granted and take pleasure in the little things.  Patrick says:  Life is not about winning, it’s about having fun.
  9. Be grateful for what you have. You’ll end up having more.  If you concentrate on what you don’t have you’ll never have enough.  Happiness is not getting what you want, but wanting what you have. Day 3 – abundance
  10. normal is relative and my relatives aren’t normal.  Be weird with your family, enjoy them. Family is important. Never forget that. Day 4 – it’s all relative
  11. Where thoughts go energy flows. Day 20 – make a wish  Talk about the things you’re working on, act as if, and it will come!  Day 24 – excited  Self doubt paves the way to a self-fulfilling prophecy.  Tell yourself you can, then prove yourself right!  Day 18 – stretch   What you feed grows.  Grow something awesome!
  12. It is easy to focus on the have nots and the have tos and forget about the already been done and already haves.  Make a list of all that you have accomplished, all that you already have and it will change your whole perspective. Day 6 – list
  13. It is OK to have a bad day.  Day 7 – bad day
  14. Passion ignites the flame that inspires the actions that makes dreams become reality.  Passion is what brings meaning and purpose into our lives, especially if that passion involves giving back, helping others and making a difference.  Trust the process.  Day 15
  15. Keep an open mind, and learn new ideas. Then teach these ideas to others. Learning and teaching are linked in a perfect cycle, in which information comes to you when you need it. How? Stay Honest, Open and Willing. Day 8 – Golden
  16. No expectations = no disappointment.  Delink from the outcome and enjoy the ride!   Day 10 – poison vs. nectar
  17. It doesn’t have to be done all at once.  It will never all be finished.  There will always be more to do.  I don’t have it all figured out.  I can’t do everything.  But I can do anything.  Day 11 – don’t sweat
  18. Life can seem like a big slick boulder – no idea where to go, how to get up, how to move forward.  In those moments: ask for help, take the risk and make shit happen  Day 12 – jtree
  19. Detroit is the greatest city in the world – if you haven’t been you need to go. Day 17 – The D
  20. Yoga, in the end is much more than a workout – it is a stretch beyond the physical.  Through the practice of yoga I have learned a lot about who I am, and who I am not.  It has taught me about acceptance, integrity, truth, balance and most importantly how to get comfy in my discomfort. Yoga is life and life is yoga.  Day 18 – stretch
  21. Give more, take less, be of service. Day 19 – ode to gramps
  22. possibility is up to me – the only place where things are impossible lies in my own head.  Out there, in the world, lies infinite possibility.  Day 22 – possibility
  23. when we set aside all the craziness we’re left only with the people in our lives. Day 23- friends
  24. This world can seem really big, really lonely and really pointless sometimes… when that happens think about what you’re grateful for. Your frown will turn upside down.  Remember: I am right where I need to be. I am ENOUGH! Day 26 – grateful
  25. Music makes everything better. Without music, life would be a mistake. – Friedrich Nietzche  Day 27 – my life in music
  26. What you possess, possesses you.  When you look back, you won’t remember the stuff you bought, you’ll remember the times you spent surrounded by good people, the things you did for others and the time spent with family.  Make time to make memories.  Spending all of your waking hours working to pay for that new bag/car/shoes you want…not worth it. Day 28 – The Money Post
  27. Make every day a celebration Day 29 – celebrate
  28. Respect yourself enough to walk away from anything that no longer serves you, grows you or makes you happy.  If you’re struggling – talk about it.  Let’s get real people.
  29. Everyone has an opinion.  Listen to your own truth, follow your instincts, free yourself of judgment so that you may be yourself – everyone else is taken. Day 2 – free to be & Day 9 – real
  30. Afraid? Ask yourself: “what’s the worst thing that could happen?” if you can live with whatever the answer is – go for it! Choose to face EVERYTHING and meet it with a roar – nothing to be scared of, we got this shit! – Day 21 – fear

Here’s to a decade of awesome! Progress, not perfection… One Down Dog at at time!

Day 22 – possibility

This year has been a crazy roller coaster ride of absolute sheer awesomeness and terrible no-good awfulness.  There have been days of pure hopelessness and days full of possibility.   Today is one of the latter.

I have had a mission, a vision, a dream for some time now and it’s finally beginning to come to fruition.  Had an amazing meeting tonight – a yes meeting.  I love yes meetings!  So then why do I feel so freaked out?

…and the fear creeps back in.  I can’t be the only one to feel this way.  To have everything I’ve been working so hard for actually fall into my lap and feel like “Oh shit, now what?”

I am super prepared; I know that I’ve got this.  I know that I can do it, that I am enough, that it will be all good – I know.  But there is this little voice that says, “what if?” and “don’t get your hopes up.”

And back on the fucking rolling coaster I go.

But the beauty of the roller coaster is that I am the not only the passenger, but also the operator – I push the buttons.  At any point, I can press the emergency break and get off the damn thing.  So this is me pushing the breaks and getting off.

Because the reality is that possibility is up to me – the only place where things are impossible lies in my own head.  Out there, in the world, lies infinite possibility.

Time to show up, do the work and stay out of the results.  The worst thing that could happen is that nothing happens… no biggie, back to work 🙂

day 14 – the start

Starting is not easy; often times it is the hardest thing to do.  It is full of uncertainty, requires getting comfortable with the not so comfy stuff, putting yourself out there and taking a risk. As I reflect on these 30 years of living I think of how many ideas, dreams and goals have gone unrealized because the idea of starting was just too overwhelming. The lists just pile up and then sit there, waiting. I am an idea person, not a follow through person.

Scratch that

I am a creative idea person with excellent follow through skills that gets shit done and does them well.  #30daysto30 🙂

The first step in getting started is letting go of old stories, preconceived ideas about ourselves that prevent us from truly living. Because that one time, back when we were _ years old, we tried something and failed we hold ourselves hostage for years. Doesn’t make any sense, and yet I know I do it all the time. Or rather, I did 😛

The next step is motivation – putting some wind into our sails.
Here are some “get your booty into gear” inspiring quotes:

The biggest mistake you can ever make, is being too afraid to make one.

If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.  ― Lewis Carroll

The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing. – Walt Disney

Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises. – Demosthenes

A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step. – Lao Tsu

Begin today. Declare out loud to the universe that you are willing to let go of struggle and eager to learn through joy.  – Sarah Ban Breathnach

There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth…not going all the way, and not starting. – Buddha

Do not wait until the conditions are perfect to begin. Beginning makes the conditions perfect. – Alan Cohen

The secret to living the life of your dreams is to start living the life of your dreams today, in every little way you possibly can. – Mike Dooley

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before beginning to improve the world.  – Anne Frank

Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.  – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Life is not a dress rehearsal. Stop practicing what you’re going to do and just go do it. In one bold stroke you can transform today.  – Marilyn Grey

Stop worrying and driving myself nuts waiting for all the answers, for perfection, and for the end result to be clear. Start now, do it NOW. Stop waiting for the right moment, the right circumstances, the right people.  Start doing the next right thing where I am, with what I have in this moment. Stop getting in the way of the flow of the universe. Start breathing, opening up and being willing to allow possibility to present itself. Stop making life miserable and unbearable with judgment, self-loathing and fear. Start having fun, finding joy and celebrating even the smallest of successes.  Make awesome happen… One Down Dog at a time.

Today I am going to send an email with a proposal to make a dream of mine come true. It doesn’t look exactly how I thought it would. It might not happen right away. It might not happen at all. It won’t be perfect, it will take a lot of effort, it will be just right for right now. It is a step.

one  step   forward.

In the words of Seth Godin, “You might not end up with perfect, but it’s significantly more valuable than being stuck.”
