Impact Report 2017

Here’s your 2017 Impact Report. You made an AMAZING difference in the world with donations, classes, and helping us raise awareness. Our minds are blown and hearts exploding with the amount of love you’ve put into the world. Take a look at all of your efforts of awesome. Your giving has not been about a donation, it’s been about making a difference.

ACLU – $360 – From just the jars at the desk. Thanks for droppin’ those dolla’s

American Cancer Society – $3,897 – I KNOW! I KNOW! It’s crazy. Hallie did an amazing job raising money on an crowd funding page as well as her Girl Power Class. This is one that really brought people together, telling their stories, sharing support, and raising a whole lot of love for those battling cancer. #FuckCancer

EarthJustice – $100 – Cant remember why we donated here, but we’re down!

Miry’s List–  $1612.76 – Miry is a student here! Eagle Rock local welcoming and helping refugee families get settled in Southern California.

SIJCC – $1870 – Our neighbors on Bates St in Silverlake. We LOVE them! We rent their space on days we have too much going on to host Teacher Training there.

No Kid Hungry –  $180 – A monthly donation.

Planned Parenthood – $1870 – A huge portion of this was from buying sage wants made by our florist Sibyl Sofia Floral Design! Jars at the desks, and matching your donations!

Coalition For Humane Immigration Rights – $150 – Hannah Jorvasky, our ODDfam working as a union organizer helped us set this one up!

Susan G. Komen For The Cure – $260 – We’re seriously saying #FuckCancer this year.

Scleroderma Foundation – $300 – I’m pretty sure Arielle Miller and her husband Greg raised over 1,000 but this is our donation from the jars at the desk and a fundraiser class. Its amazing to see how this community takes challenges and turns them into changes.

Greater Houston Community – $800 – With a lot of Texas #ODDfam it was a cause we needed to rally behind when they were hit badly by the hurricane.

Super Sage– $50 – One of our student’s found her way to ODD because it was the closest thing to the childrens hospital where her warrior of a son is kicking cancer’s ass. You can donate here. You can catch them in Toddler&Me

Dressember – $103 and a whole ton of clothes! – Your clothing swaps have made massive contributions!

We dont know how many clothes you’ve donated to the Womens Shelter downtown from clothing swaps, or clothes to goodwill, or mats to charities, highschools and more. The capacity for giving this community has is powerful.

THANK YOU!

Lets show 2018 what we’ve got. Practice classes are $5 and proceeds go to a different charity each month, There’s jars at the desk for Prison Yoga and Mediation right now. What causes do you need some support rallying behind? We’re here.

Make Awesome Happen

makeawesomehappen

As many of you know, One Down Dog is housed in a temporary space limiting our offerings. We recently found our own space and can’t wait to share it with you! In order to make this dream a reality we have created an indiegogo campaign to raise the funds necessary to move into our permanent home. What is indiegogo? Indiegogo is a crowdfunding platform, similar to kickstarter, where people raise money through fundraising campaigns to tell their story and get the word out. The word is out…
Question is… are you down?

Make Awesome Happen… One Down Dog at a time!!

the story

One Down Dog began as one of those big scary dreams in the mind of Jessica Rosen. You know the one – that vision you just can’t seem to shake, the thing that keeps you up at night, the goal you can’t let go of even though every rational bone in your body says it’s crazy. For years Jessica dreamt of opening a community space. For years she lived in self-doubt. For years she felt it was impossible… until it wasn’t anymore.

One Down Dog became a reality when insane amounts of hard work met sheer determination and the love and support of family and friends. On January 26th, 2013 we held our first class in our temporary location. Since our opening day we have grown exponentially and created the most amazing community of dynamic individuals – you!!

All that being said, we are ready to move forward. We are ready to plant our roots and stick around for a while. We are ready for our forever home where we can continue to grow. This is where you come in…

what we need

We are currently in negotiations with a location in our neighborhood (don’t worry folks, we’re staying in Silverlake!!). This move will allow us to offer so much more – with two yoga rooms we will have a FULL schedule with a wide range of classes (YAY!!) including bootcamp, restorative yoga, TRX, Pilates, Buti yoga, kids yoga, massage, acupuncture, meditation, pre-natal, and so much more! In addition, we will have an area to hang out with free wifi, a store full of products you love and a facility where you can have fun, laugh, get a great workout and connect with real people!

While the location is perfect, the square footage is exactly what we’re looking for, and it meets most of our needs, the space needs some love and TLC. We will need to do the following:

  • lay wood floors with added sound-proofing
  • build benches with cubbies and comfy pillows to hang out on
  • update the bathrooms
  • paint the walls pretty colors
  • set up our super awesome retail shop

It has always been our belief that alone we can do a lot of great things, but together… together we can move mountains, which is why we need your support in helping us to build our beautiful community space, a place that provides a service and feels like home to everyone that walks through the doors. Because for us, this isn’t just about business, it’s about offering something up to the community that we feel is missing on the East Side, it’s about community and service work. We have a give back plan – because we know the best way to show gratitude is to pay it forward. Want to learn more about our plan? Click here.

Give Back – make a difference

At One Down Dog we are strong believers in paying it forward to make a difference. After all, what’s the point of having if you’re not willing to share? What’s the point of getting if you’re not willing to give? We would not be where we are without the help and support of so many generous individuals and businesses. We want to do the same for others – to afford others the opportunity to live their dreams. We believe in using the teachings of yoga to make an impact. We believe in service. We believe in giving it away to keep it. And most importantly, we believe in the power of sharing.

giveback1

HOW WE GIVE BACK:

Through the offering of community and donation classes we are able to serve those unable to afford a regular yoga practice.

LAMP – Our instructors lead a weekly yoga class on the LAMP campus for employees and the homeless to experience the calming and transformative benefits that yoga has to offer.

TEEN YOGA – Upon opening our new location we will offer teen yoga twice a week followed by a process group where participants can share, connect and support one another. Class will be by donation – all are welcome.

DONATION CLASSES – We will offer donation based classes in our second yoga room and throughout the community at local parks for those unable to afford a monthly rate.

THE GIVE-BACK PLAN:

Every quarter we will align with a cause or idea we support. Be it a student’s big dream, an organization in need, or an individual going through tough times we will dedicate three months to helping them out. During those three-months, we will promote the selected cause via social media and a studio spotlight. We will offer opportunities for our community to get involved financially or by donating their time and/or services. In addition, we will contribute 5% of our quarterly profits to the cause. Through marketing exposure, financial assistance and lots of love, we will help people to realize their dreams and create awesome lives through our #makeawesomehappen give-back plan.

Example: A student has started an organization to aid in the LA River clean up. They are in need of helping hands, exposure and funds. We post a picture and write up of the organization on our #makeawesomehappen board located in our lobby. We write a blog post dedicated to informing our community of their plan and promote them via social media as well. We help the student to network with community members that may be able to offer them support and help facilitate trades of services and goods as well as organize a clean up group. In addition 5% of our quarterly profit is donated to the cause. As a result, our student is able to organize several clean ups, has gained community and media exposure through our marketing efforts and has the funds to continue the project’s forward momentum.

How we pick: We choose causes we can stand behind that benefit our community directly and make a difference in the lives of others. We require that all recipients have a give back plan of their own so that they may pay it forward. Have an idea or know of something great we should align with? Hit us up, or leave a comment below!

WORK/TRADE:

For those interested in becoming a part of the One Down Dog community that are unable to afford the cost of a monthly membership we offer opportunities to work in trade for classes, teacher trainings and other services. Hours are flexible and based on the needs of both the student and studio. Interested? Email us!
